NFA Restricted Items

All of these types of silencers are considered to be NFA restricted items, which means that they are subject to regulation under the National Firearms Act (NFA). The NFA requires that silencers be registered with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) and that a tax stamp be obtained before they can be transferred or sold. The NFA also imposes restrictions on who can purchase or own a silencer. 

NFA restricted items, including silencers, can only be sold by dealers who hold a Special Occupational Tax (SOT) license. SOT dealers are licensed by the ATF to engage in the business of dealing in NFA restricted items. They must undergo a rigorous background check and be in compliance with all federal and state regulations before they can obtain an SOT license.
